What you should do before the motorcycle is picked up
You do not simply call the transportation company, put it in the trailer and sign the papers. There are several things that you need to do to make sure that the bike arrives safe and sound. First of all clean your bike and check for any pre-existing damages. Document the condition of your bike and you will be one step ahead in case of an insurance claim. Note any dips, chips or scratches and mechanical issues.
Take pictures of your bike from various angles, especially of the existing damage. Date all the details and show them to the driver when he arrives. The driver will also check the motorcycle before loading it into the trailer and every detail will be added to the contract and sign by both parties.
Then you should remove all lose items from your bike, because no company is responsible for those. So accessories that are damaged or lost will not be covered by insurance.
Should you empty the gas tank?
Although you do not have to empty the gas tank, package the motorcycle or remove the battery, there is one detail that you should keep in mind: a full gas tank means extra weight to pay for. That is why it would be better to drain the fuel to at least a quarter tank to reduce weight and drop the price tag on your transport. Usually, companies offer you a price quote when you contact them and give you a totally different price after the bike is loaded.
Why enclosed trailer?
Before shipping, the motorcycle will be covered with protective coverings and cushion to protect it from bumps and shocks and secure it with straps so it will not move at all during the transportation. The enclosed trailer offers many benefits, such as safety, protection, immobility and convenience. Safety is the biggest advantage offered by enclosed trailers. Soft straps are used not to damage your motorcycle in any way and special equipment to get in on and off the trailer. Being enclosed, means that it will not be touched by the elements, debris, trees and any other damaging objects and conditions.
What you should do when you receive your motorcycle?
Upon arrival, inspect your motorcycle for any damages. The company may reimburse you for the cost of repairs or pay for the repairs at a designated facility, depending on the situation and the insurance coverage.
Time expectations
Making a call to a transportation company and booking a service does not mean that they will be at your door the next day. That is why we advise you to contact the company at least a week in advance so that they have time to make all preparations and get the trailer ready for the transport. Also, when you call, you will be given estimate times, because there are certain factors to be taken into consideration such as bad weather conditions or traveling mishaps. Delays usually do not take more than three days, unless something really bad happened. Be prepared if such a situation occurs.
